Amanda Abagima: the benefits of a sugar-free diet
Globetrotter, Amanda Abagima has selected 90 traditional recipes from around the world in her book. Some were naturally ketogenic or low carb. For others, she adapted them so that they could fit into a low-carbohydrate diet.
In this interview, she explains to us the reasons that led her to turn to a low-carb or ketogenic diet.
LaNutrition: How did you discover sugar-free cooking?
Amanda Abagima: I’m part of the generation that grew up admiring beauty icons like Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss. My adolescence was marked by experimentation with various diets, in an attempt to align myself with the beauty standards imposed by society. However, in 2018, after giving birth to my first daughter, it really clicked. At that time, I was obese, and my health was seriously compromised. The loss of my brother a few years before, due to a cardiovascular accident, was an electric shock.
That’s when I started getting interested in ketogenic and low-carb eating. A friend already practiced this type of diet and had radically transformed her relationship with food while losing considerable weight. To me, this seemed like another diet of many to try. As a cooking enthusiast, I began to adapt some of my daily dishes, as well as dishes from my childhood (I am originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo), into a sugar-free version.
What are the benefits of this diet that you have observed on yourself?
The results were spectacular, with significant weight loss (25 kilos in one year). Plus, I quickly found that the benefits of reducing sugar intake went far beyond just weight loss.
I had a blood test six months after reducing my sugar intake, and the results were remarkable. My cholesterol levels, vitamins, minerals, my thyroid tests were excellent. I immediately felt a boost of energy which allowed me to return to sport, a real godsend with two children aged 2 and 5. My sleep apnea is also gone. In addition, the cravings and bouts of fatigue at 3 p.m. became less frequent. I feel good about myself and in great shape, my concentration is at its peak.
What diet are you following today? Do you allow yourself any deviations?
I am mainly a fan of a keto/low carb diet, which provides me with many benefits, while still giving me the opportunity to indulge. Once we become aware of the harmful effects of excessive sugar consumption on our health, temptations become less frequent. I may indulge in sweeter foods on special occasions like birthdays, family reunions, or vacations. However, I always make sure to choose quality options. For example, who could resist a delicious artisanal pizza prepared by a nonna in Naples? It’s a pleasure that I allow myself from time to time, while remaining faithful to my dietary principles.
How to replace wheat flour and sugar?
It is true that wheat flour and sugar are commonly used and cheaper, but their overconsumption and their impact on health are worrying. However, there are delicious and much healthier alternatives.
The keto/low carb diet, for example, is known for its anti-inflammatory effect and excludes gluten. When you adopt this dietary pattern, you can replace wheat flour with gluten-free alternatives such as almond, coconut, lupine or hazelnut flour. As for sugar, it is possible to use natural sweeteners like stevia or erythritol, which are polyols. These sweeteners do not have a significant impact on blood sugar levels, making them excellent alternatives for a balanced and tasty diet.
Can children enjoy this cuisine?
Absolutely ! Children can absolutely enjoy this cuisine, and it is essential to introduce them to healthy food choices from a young age. Although children often have a natural preference for sweet flavors, it is important to ensure that they are consuming the right sources of sugar for their health (such as fruit) and to limit refined sugar and fatty foods as much as possible. starchy foods with every meal.
What recipes would you recommend for them?
In my book you will find a variety of recipes suitable for young people. I particularly recommend dishes such as the burrito bowl, tacos, as well as sweet touches with recipes for cookies, pancakes, and even cheesecake. These dishes are designed to be both tasty and healthy, which will delight children’s taste buds while contributing to their well-being. So, don’t hesitate to involve them in preparing these delicious meals for a moment of sharing with the family!
