The Siliva is preset at a constant 9 bars of pressure which, in turn, heats to water to about 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 degrees Celsius). How To Clean Rancilio Silvia

Gaggia Classic Pro vs Rancilio Silvia? Here are the steps for cleaning your Rancilio Silvia espresso machine.

– Remove the water reservoir and empty out any remaining water. If it is still full of water, open up the steam wand to release any additional pressure inside.

– Turn the Silvia upside down on a towel or cloth to protect your counter top. You can also remove all parts except for the metal base plate if you want to make things easier (and be sure not to lose that small black rubber o-ring).

– Now comes the fun part where you get to dirty up all those towels you just used! Take apart all removable pieces including portafilters, baskets, drip tray and anything else that comes off easily. Put all removable pieces in a big bowl.

– Begin to take apart the Silvia. There are many screws that hold the machine together so be sure not to strip them! I just went at it with my Phillips head screw driver but you can use whatever you’re comfortable with. As long as your careful, there shouldn’t be any problems. If anything does get stripped, don’t worry, they can easily be replaced by many hardware stores or directly through Rancilio.

– Once everything is taken apart, your work area should look something like this (minus some parts). Some of the rubber o-rings may have come off during the disassembly process and might require a little help from you to get back in place (you can tell which ones need to be put back by their size and the fact that they are missing).

– Now it’s time to clean all of those little pieces. When you take apart anything with moving parts, make sure no rubber o-rings or metal shavings were left behind in the machine. For example, when I took apart my steam wand it had a lot of black residue inside from years of use. This is normal but if there was metallic shavings in the mix, don’t add it back into your espresso machine! Just set all of these pieces aside since they will need some more cleaning later on.

– Continue cleaning every piece until nothing is left unscrubbed. Below is the portafilter basket after I cleaned it. You can see that a lot of old coffee grounds were left behind from previous uses.

– Shake out all towels and now is a good time to sweep up any loose pieces from your counter top.

– Time to clean the internal parts of the machine. Fill up a large bowl with warm water and add some simple green cleaner or dish soap (about 1-2 tbsp). Let everything soak for about 30 minutes making sure pieces don’t get stuck together as they could break easily when taken apart later on! Don’t forget to check on things every 5 minutes or so just in case anything starts floating around thanks to all that air being trapped inside from shaking off the towels.

– After everything has soaked, empty out the bowl and begin to shake off all excess water from each piece. Don’t worry if some of the pieces such as the portafilters still have some soap left in them since this will be rinsed off later on. Set all pieces down on a fresh towel and let them dry for at least 30 minutes so you won’t accidentally get soap residue all over your hands when putting things back together! If any parts are still wet after 30 minutes, just wait another 15-30 minutes and they should be ready to use.

– Now we need to clean the boiler (aka heating core) because mineral deposits tend to build up over time and can block it from working properly. In order to do this, remove the cap from the top where that red arrow is pointing and also make sure not to lose the small rubber o-ring below it.

– Fill up a large bowl with warm water and add about a tbsp or two of dish soap. You can use a brillo pad if you want but I’ve found that using my fingers works well enough since every little nook and cranny gets cleaned out which results in less maintenance later on down the road. Let the boiler soak for at least 30 minutes making sure nothing goes wrong (i.e no parts start floating around). You may need to give things a stir every 10 minutes or so just to help break up any deposits left behind by your dish soap.

– Gaggia Classic Pro vs Rancilio Silvia? After everything has soaked for at least 30 minutes, empty out the bowl and shake off any excess water from each piece. The internal parts of the machine are now clean so let them dry on a fresh towel for at least 30 minutes before putting things back together.

– Now that all pieces are clean it’s time to reassemble your machine! Start by screwing the bottom female part (where you put the portafilter) back onto its compartment. Take note that this may be difficult to thread all the way in making sure it isn’t cross threaded by turning counter clockwise until hand tight like below. Once you can see two lines around where it meets up with the metal ring, take the wrench and turn the bottom part clockwise until you are able to no longer see any lines.

– Next, screw in your rubber gasket onto the top of the machine making sure it is placed firmly against the metal ring inside there. Then reattach your steam wand by tightening it back on with a wrench.

– Finally attach your drip tray, slide the drip pan into place, then lower down that silver handle! You can now put back on your plastic knob for your steam dial if you took it off but only tighten it about 1/3-1/2 of a rotation so you don’t crack anything! Voila, here’s what it should look like when everything is put together again.
